Understanding Organic Waste

Why Need an Organic Bin?

More than half of everything we toss away can be put in an organic bin. Instead of putting food and yard waste in the garbage, we can convert it into something useful – compost! By diverting organic waste from landfills, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

Who Needs an Organic Bin?

The City of Saskatoon is moving to a city-wide Bylaw and Enforcement green program. As of July 1, 2023, businesses and organizations that generate food and yard waste as part of their operations, such as restaurants and grocery stores, will be required to have separate bins to divert organics and recycling from the garbage. Residents who use large communal garbage and recycling bins (typically those living in condos and apartments) as well as residential owners can also benefit from using organic bins.

Enforcement by the City of Saskatoon begins in October 2024.

For more information about this bylaw visit one of the following: Organics Guide or Waste Bylaw

Importance of Cleaning and Tipping the Bin

Organic Waste shall be collected and emptied Once Per Week (some places may require tippings more frequently). We provide bin Cleaning Once Every 3 Years at no charge. Extra cleanings at request would be an extra charge. Extra cleanings may be required if bags are open or broken causing issues or if the City of Saskatoon requires it. Note: we will not clean the ground where the bin was placed on your site. We will clean the interior of the bin and return it to you clean and empty.

What To Put In The Bin

All Items are Acceptable:

  • Unbagged Yard Waste
  • Fruit & Vegetables
  • Meats, Seafood & Bones
  • Food-soiled paper products
  • Fats & Grease
  • Dairy & Grains
  • Coffee grounds & filters
  • Tea bags
  • Eggs & Eggshells
  • BPI- Certified Compostable Bags or Paper Bags

Acceptable Bags In the Bin:

The only bag that is acceptable in the bin is BPI-CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE BAGS or 100% PAPER BAGS. This is the responsibility of the people placing organic waste into the bin. No plastic bags or garbage bags are acceptable. If plastic or garbage bags are seen in the bin, it must then go to the landfill. There will be a fine charged by the City of Saskatoon of $1,000.00 if this happens (NEW bylaw in effect Oct 1, 2024).
