Understanding Asbestos

What Is Asbestos?

From the 1950 – 1990s, asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous material,  was often used in buildings as an insulation and fireproofing solution. Since it was frequently mixed with other materials, it might be difficult to determine whether you have actually located it.

Typically asbestos can be found in products like:

  • Ceiling tiles
  • Floor tiles
  • Pipe insulation
  • Boilers
  • Sprayed-on coatings

Why Have A Bin Designated For Asbestos?

We can help you safely dispose of asbestos-containing materials by providing a bin, safely transporting the materials, and disposing of them properly. Transporting any kind of asbestos-containing materials requires specific requirements and training that we have. Any material likely to contain asbestos is considered to be asbestos-containing material which is hazardous. If asbestos fibers are inhaled this can cause chronic, irreversible, and life-threatening lung diseases. These diseases, which can occur several decades after exposure, include asbestosis (a lung scarring disease), lung cancer, and mesothelioma. We would like to mitigate the spread of asbestos-containing materials by handling and disposing of them the right way.

Who Needs An Asbestos Bin?

Anyone who is doing repairs, maintenance, renovations, and other processes on a building that contains or may contain asbestos. As this work may disturb asbestos-containing materials and release asbestos fibers into the air. Please note: Asbestos should always be removed from your home by a qualified professional.

What To Put In The Bin

ACCEPTABLE BAGS IN THE BIN:

There is a legal requirement to double bag asbestos-containing material in two six-mil polyethylene bags that are leak-tight while still wet. The bags must be goose-neck tied and sealed with duct tape. DO NOT overfill the bag. Make sure the bag is labeled with the word “Asbestos” (the bag should already have this written on it when bought).
