Understanding Manure

What Is Manure?

Manure is animal or bird waste that is used as a natural fertilizer to help plants grow. It adds nutrients to the soil, making it healthier for crops. A manure bin is a specialized container designed for the disposal and collection of manure and related organic waste, such as bedding materials and composted manure.

Why Are Different Types of Manure Disposed of Separately?

At Allan’s Disposal Services Ltd., we separate livestock, bird, and pigeon manure because each type requires different handling to protect the environment and ensure safety:

  • Livestock Manure (e.g., cows, pigs, horses): This manure is often composted or used as fertilizer. Its consistent composition makes it safe for agricultural use when handled properly.
  • Bird Manure (e.g., chickens, turkeys, ducks): High in nutrients, bird manure is great for composting but needs special care to remove pathogens before use.
  • Pigeon Manure: Pigeon droppings can carry harmful fungi and bacteria, making them a health risk. They are treated separately to ensure safety.

Separating manure types allows us to recycle responsibly, protect public health, and comply with Saskatchewan’s environmental regulations.

Why Need A Manure Bin?

Using a manure bin helps manage and dispose of manure efficiently, preventing odor, reducing environmental impact, and facilitating proper recycling or composting. It ensures that manure is handled in a controlled manner, minimizing health risks and promoting sustainable waste management practices

Who Needs A Manure Bin?

Manure bins are used by farmers, ranchers, stable owners, and agricultural businesses who need a reliable way to handle and dispose of large quantities of animal waste or bird waste. They are also useful for landscapers and gardeners who use manure as compost or soil amendment.

What To Put In The Bin

Animal Manure: Manure from livestock such as cow, pig, sheep, horse, donkey, mule, alpaca, and other farm animals.

  • Bedding Materials: Organic materials used for bedding in animal stalls, such as straw, hay, or wood shavings, if they are mixed with manure.

  • Composted Manure: Finished or partially composted manure that is ready for use as soil amendment but still needs to be disposed of or processed further.

OR

Bird Manure: Manure from flight and flightless birds, such as chicken, turkey, duck, geese, quail, and game birds.

  • Bedding Materials: Organic materials used for bedding in animal stalls, such as straw, hay, or wood shavings, if they are mixed with manure.

  • Composted Manure: Finished or partially composted manure that is ready for use as soil amendment but still needs to be disposed of or processed further.

  • NO pigeon manure (Disposed Of Separately): If you have pigeon manure , please talk to one of our representatives about how it is disposed of. It goes in a separate bin and follows a specific procedure.
