Business & Organizations Bylaw

All businesses and organizations that generate food or yard waste in Saskatoon are required to separate their disposal materials into different bins. All businesses and organizations are required to: Have separate labelled containers for garbage, recycling and organics.

If your establishment belongs under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes of industries that are known to generate organic waste, this bylaw regulation applies regardless of establishment size or number of employees or tenants. Home-based businesses are not included in this regulation however, they are responsible for the removal of materials that exceed the capacity of their residential containers.  

Enforcement by the City of Saskatoon begins in October 2024.

Why Is Having Just One Bin Bad?

Using just one bin for all household waste, recycling, and organics leads to everything being mixed together, making it harder to separate and recycle materials. This means more waste ends up in landfills, where it can release harmful greenhouse gases and take up space for years. Organic waste in landfills produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and recyclable materials lose their value, increasing the demand for new resources. Separating disposal materials helps protect the environment and reduces our carbon footprint.
