Railway Ties & Power Poles
Learn about our railway tie and power pole bin sizes, placement requirements, and safe disposal guidelines.
Railway Tie & Power Pole Disposal Bins
Railway ties and power poles require special disposal due to the creosote coating used to preserve the wood. These materials cannot go to municipal landfills and must be transported to a designated facility in Saskatchewan.
What Are Railway Ties & Power Poles?
Railway ties are horizontal wooden beams laid across railroad tracks to keep rails evenly spaced and stable. Switch ties are longer versions used at rail turnouts or crossovers. Power poles are tall wooden poles used to support electrical wires distributing electricity across long distances.
Most are coated with creosote, an oily preservative containing hazardous compounds including arsenic. Because of this treatment these materials must be handled and disposed of carefully to prevent contamination of soil, water, wildlife, and people.

Call or contact us and we provide a custom estimate based on your project size and locations.
Safety & Delivery
We provide guidance on the safe handling and loading of creosote-treated railway ties, switch ties, and power poles. Protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and safety glasses should always be used when handling these materials. Our open-top roll-off bins include required warning signage and are designed specifically for the safe transport of treated railway wood.
Fill & Use
You fill the bin at your own pace. All railway ties and power poles must be under 8 ft long and fit in the bin, level full.
Tipping & Reporting
Once the bin is full, we transport the material to the designated recycling facility in Saskatchewan that accepts railway ties and power poles. Because these materials are treated with creosote, they cannot be disposed of in standard municipal landfills. Our team ensures the material is handled and transported according to applicable safety and environmental regulations.
